Sunnydale White Suffolk stud has recorded an “excellent” sale, according to principal Andrew Weidemann of Rupanyup.
Mr Weidemann said the family’s seventh annual on-property sale had smashed their records for highest price and average.
The $3000 top-priced ram was Lot 3, a son of Detpa Grove 120648, which the family bought for $8000 at Detpa Grove’s 2013 on-property sale.
Mr Weidemann said DG 120648 had proven to be a wise investment. "He has proven to be quite a good investment, having also sired the ram we sold for at the Bendigo Elite Sale for $5000,” Mr Weidemann said.
The rams that made $3000 at this on-property and the $5000 from the Bendigo sale last week came second in the White Suffolk pairs at Sheepvention, Hamilton. He said they had received inquiries to buy semen lots from their shared sire. Return buyer Troy Hemley, of Glenorchy, purchased the top-priced ram, which at 14 months of age weighed 122 kilograms. The ram had Australian Sheep Breeding Values of 0.493 birth weight, 9.225 weaning weight, 15.566 post-weaning weight, -0.873 for fat and 1.605 for eye muscle depth.
A son of DG 110185 fetched the second-top price of $2600. It was purchased by Lendon Polkinghorne, Charinga White Suffolk stud, Berrimal. Mr Weidemann said this marked the first time Charinga White Suffolks had bought from his stud to use its own stud breeding operation. Volume buyers included ANGIP Nominees, which purchased 13 rams at auction (and an additional five after the sale), paying to $1100.
Steven Snelson, of Echuca, purchased eight rams paying to $1400; Linden Pastoral, of Marnoo, bought six paying to $1350 and Tony Heath, from Balmoral, purchased six rams, averaging $1200. With four rams each were Jeff and Tiffany Dobson, Kaniva, av $1300 and Greg McNally including two at $1400, and Mt Bolangum Pty Ltd to $1300.
Mr Weidemann said it was terrific to have return and new clients, who came from throughout western Victorian and further afield. “Overall, the rams we have been purchasing and those we’ve retained in the stud are proving to continue to lift up on the strong genetic gains for high growth rates and plenty of muscle,” Mr Weidemann said.
